Botanical/Scientific Name: Prunus nigra

Fruiting: The fruit is a samara, elliptic to ovate-elliptic, 10–13 mm long by 6–8 mm broad

Fruiting Season: –

Flowering Season: mid to late spring. Showy, rose-pink flowers are carried in profusion on bare wood in spring;  The winter buds are chestnut brown, long-pointed at the tip, up to 8 millimetres (0.31 in) long;  The flowers are 15–25 millimetres (0.59–0.98 in) diameter, with five rounded petals, white fading to pale pink.

Plant Structure: deciduous tree to 4 meters high and wide

Size: deciduous shrub or small tree growing to 10 metres (33 ft) tall with a trunk up to 25 cm diameter

Misc Extra: The branchlets are bright green at first, later become dark brown tinged with red, and spiny.

Features:  Rounded decidous tree with deep purple leaves that have a red tone when young.  Mass of single flowers from early to mid Spring.

Conditions:  Will grow well in most free draining soils in sun or light shade.  Thrives on fertile organic rich soils.

For best results:  Enrich soil with plenty of organic material including well rotted compost.  use a good thick mulch layer to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.  Select a site protected from blustery wind.

Planting ideas and uses:  good central in a mixed shrub bed; use a colour contrast against deep and lime green foliaged shrubs and trees; site to enjoy Spring blossom.
