Moringa Oleifera
Moringa oleifera is a fast growing, drought resistant tree native to northern India and widely grown throughout South and Southeast Asia. It is commonly known as moringa, drumstick tree, horseradish tree, or malunggay.
The tree is valued for its highly nutritious leaves and young seed pods, which are widely used as vegetables and in traditional herbal medicine. Moringa is also known for its ability to help purify water.
Moringa can grow up to 10 to 12 meters tall, with light gray bark and feathery green leaves. It produces fragrant yellowish white flowers within six months of planting. In warm climates the tree may flower seasonally or throughout the year.
The tree forms long three sided pods that contain dark brown seeds with papery wings. To make harvesting easier, moringa trees are commonly pruned to a height of 1 to 2 meters.
Moringa is a versatile and sustainable plant valued for its nutritional content, traditional uses, and environmental benefits.
